October is almost here, which means it's almost time for the  Día de los Muertos Celebration at La Villita Historic Arts Village.

With 35,000 people attending the event last year, the two-day festival brings together traditional art and culture with live music.

Perhaps the best part of the celebration is the 2015 Community Altar Exhibition and Contest and the 2015 Student Altar Competition. Applications are being accepted online at The deadline for submissions is Friday, October 9 at 5 p.m.

There are cash prizes for winners, including $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 to the audience favorite. The best student entry also nabs a $500 award. Winners will be announced on October 25.

The two-day festival also includes more than 45 vendors, workshops on history and traditions of the Day of the Dead, and a dance, drum and puppet procession by  Las Monas. Oh, and there are free all-day concerts in the Arneson River Theater.

Organizers are encouraging revelers to use public transportation to ease congestion. VIA Metropolitan Transit's downtown circulator, the E, is recommended.
