One of Sam Shepard’s many masterworks of American theatre, Fool for Love promises a night of scandal and brutal can’t-live-with-’em, can’t-live-without-’em love. The 1983 Obie award-winning play follows Eddie and May, ex-lovers who seem hopelessly doomed to repeat their destructive past. Though May had begun a life on her own and even had a new date on the night in question, Eddie unexpectedly shows up to get her back. The date is left to watch, bewildered, as Eddie and May tear at each other and commentary from the “Old Man” reveals that there may actually be some incest going on here (!). Featuring Shepard’s typical themes of a drunken, disconnected father and dying cowboy culture in the desolate West, the emotional tumult takes place in a motel room in the Mojave Desert, where the walls shake and creak as Eddie and May scream, slam doors and struggle with crises of genealogy and identity. Fool for Love marks the Cellar Theatre directorial debut of the Playhouse’s CEO and Artistic Director, George Green, who’ll surely bring his own touch to this raw, daring and timeless play. $12-$42, 8pm Fri & Sat, 3pm Sun, The Playhouse Cellar Theatre, 800 W Ashby Pl., (210)733-7258, — Rachel Cooley
