Since its inception in 2009, RuPaul’s Drag Race has simultaneously championed and challenged drag as an art form — pushing contestants closer to social media stardom, touring gigs and recording contracts while shifting local spotlights away from established and emerging queens alike. (Addressing this conundrum, season eight favorite Thorgy Thor put it in a nutshell by telling QueertyRuPaul’s Drag Race has sort of killed drag for queens who are not on the show.”) With a recent and significant move from LGBT-centric Logo TV to Viacom-owned VH1, the Emmy-winning reality series recently kicked off its ninth season with a record-breaking premiere that attracted nearly 1 million viewers — thanks in no small part to an appearance by Lady Gaga. Promising “more stars, more stunts and more shenanigans than ever before,” season nine is stacked with 14 queens, including Austin native Farrah Moan. Concocting her name from both late Texan icon Farrah Fawcett and basically “being a whore,” the 23-year-old performer favors a larger-than-life aesthetic that’s part showgirl, part fetish vixen. The Las Vegas-based drag starlet lands in the Alamo City for two Wednesday night performances courtesy of Rey Lopez Entertainment. $10-$25, 10:30pm & midnight Wed, Apr. 12, Heat Nightclub, 1500 N. Main Ave., (210) 386-4537, reylopezentertainment.com.
