We were invited to catch Opera San Antonio’s dress rehearsal of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville and are delighted to report that the production is in good shape, aided by some terrific singing (particularly by Sarah Coburn as Rosina and Luis Ledesma as Figaro) as well as some innovative stagecraft. While much of the stage action will be familiar to opera vets — double-takes, snoring, coquetry and the like — there’s also a nifty shadow-play sequence with a number of effective sight gags. The direction is by the in-demand E. Loren Meeker, who has gigs at Wolf Trap and Lyric Opera of Chicago on the horizon. Originally created for the Glimmerglass Opera Festival, John Conklin’s production design boasts a number of witty floral flourishes, particularly an over-the-top backdrop for the concluding wedding festivities. $35-$190, 7:30pm Sat, May 6, 2:30pm Sun, May 7, Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, 100 Auditorium Circle, (210) 223-8624, operasa.org.
