Out In SA Celebrates the Launch of its Fall 2017 Issue

Out In SA is celebrating the launch of its fall issue, which features a cover story profiling a diverse group of community allies, as well as a remembrance piece inspired the McNay Art Museum's exhibition "Chuck Ramirez: All This and Heaven Too," and a fashion spread starring trans performer and activist Aamori Olujimi.

While some readers say Out in SA is defining what the "A" in LGBTQIA stands for, that was never the magazine's intention.

"The 'A' can stand for 'ally' or 'asexual'. Some prefer the term 'all,'" said editor-in-chief Bryan Rindfuss. "Doing a feature on allies is something we've been talking about for a long time."

In the cover story "Allies United," (which includes a not-so-subtle Golden Girls reference), Out In SA contributors got to know eight vocal allies including Texas State Representative Diego Bernal, Fiesta Youth founder Emily Leeper and activists DeAnne Cuellar-Cintron and Louis Cintron Jr.

Rindfuss explained that both readers and contributors have pitched ally-themed stories over the past year, and the fall issue collects multiple profiles in one package.

Contributor Sarah Fisch pays tribute to late local artist Chuck Ramirez (aka Tía Chuck) as both an artist and a gay man who was HIV-positive. She also lets Chuck speak for himself, with excerpts from a 2000 interview.

The issue also spotlights the beauty and fierceness that is Aamori Olujimi, a trans performer and activist. A photo series transforms her into iconic divas throughout time, including Iman, Donna Summer and RuPaul.
