San Antonio is a city of attractions. There are historic attractions. There are shopping attractions. There are late night boozing attractions.

And now there are escape room attractions.

Escape rooms were first developed by the company SCRAP in Kyoto, Japan in 2007. The idea was based off of video games with the same objective - solve puzzles to complete a task and get out of a room/situation before time runs out.

Although it may seem like a daunting challenge to some, people find escape rooms are a surprisingly fun way to spend the afternoon. Here in San Antonio, Extreme Escape can help satisfy a player’s urge to MacGyver their way out of a precarious situation.

Extreme Escape was among the first escape room attractions in The Alamo City with multiple adventures to choose from. The business is part of Phillips Entertainment Inc., the same company that brought San Antonio Ripley’s Haunted Adventure, the Guinness World Records Museum and the Tomb Rider 3D Adventure Ride and Arcade.

Extreme Escape has a definitive edge over other escape room entrepreneurs. They were not only one of the first businesses to have multiple escape rooms to choose from in San Antonio, their design team also includes immersive theming experts who have helped create iconic rides and attractions. The design team brings decades of experience, which has helped Extreme Escape attract people to this relatively new concept.

The real draw of escape rooms is their immersive environment. Players get to step into a life-sized video game when they enter the room. Few escape rooms go to the lengths that Extreme Escape goes to in an effort to transform a space. Their design team didn’t stop with sights and sounds. They’ve also incorporated unique smells to complete the effect of being in another time and place.

In a time when businesses are pouring billions in virtual reality research and development, escape rooms may seem like a risky business. But the popularity of escape rooms and phenomenons like Pokemon Go prove that people are still looking for real world experiences they can share with others.

The escape room business has been so busy, Extreme Escape recently opened a second location in Stone Oak. The Stone Oak location has allowed Extreme Escape to get even more creative with new storylines, puzzles and set design with four totally different escape rooms.

“One of the most exciting elements of escape rooms is that everything is evolving and improving,” said Alex Amaro, Director of Marketing & Team Development at Extreme Escape. “Our newest location is what we’re most excited about. It incorporates never before seen technology in escape games. The design team spent months creating a fully immersive setting unlike we’ve ever seen with special effects, lighting, floor to ceiling decor and even small details like specific wall textures and flooring.”

And it’s not just families and groups of friends that are playing escape room games. Numerous corporations and businesses in San Antonio have visited Extreme Escape for a unique team building experience. With four escape rooms in each location, Extreme Escape is able to accommodate teams as large as 40 people at once. Companies like USAA, HEB and Expedia have used Extreme Escape as a creative solution for improving communication and problem solving skills among their team members.

Extreme Escape is now open seven days a week at both locations. Active military and emergency responders are invited to come out on Heroes Play Free Mondays. Throughout the year Extreme Escape also partners with local charities to offer special discounts and raise donations for worthy causes.
