With San Antonio’s Tricentennial inspiring deeper looks into myriad aspects of our city — from its multilayered history to its evolution and enduring landmarks — the Southwest School of Art stands out as a local treasure that’s adapted with changing times. Following its foundation as a nonprofit in 1965 and relocation to the historic Ursuline Convent and Academy in 1971, the SSA expanded its campus by taking over a Sears Automotive Center in 1998 and rolled out an “intimate, intensive college degree program” in 2014.

Proudly the Lone Star State’s only independent art college, the SSA is about to unveil “All That Remains,” a collective senior thesis exhibition showcasing works by Gaby Borrego, Juan Zavala Castro, Ethan Gonzalez, Ayanna Sherri Denise Irek, Audrey LeGalley, Lauri Garcia Jones, Zachary Andrew Canestro Jones, Hailey Nichole Kuhn, Nicki Lucio, Abraham Alvarez Vasquez and Ali Wiesse.

Following the big reveal, all 11 members of this “legacy class” will receive hand-lettered diplomas and medals (crafted in the school’s metals studio) at an inaugural commencement ceremony with remarks from SSA President Paula Owen, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and noted artist Dario Robleto, among others.

Free, opening reception Sat, April 18 5:30-7:30pm, on view 9am-5pm Mon-Sat, 11am-4pm Sun through May 20, Southwest School of Art, Santikos Exhibition Galleries, 1201 Navarro St., (210) 200-8200, swschool.org.
