Erosion, memory, power and performance are but a few of the themes and concepts one can expect to encounter in four new summer exhibitions at Blue Star Contemporary.

Assembled by BSC’s executive director Mary Heathcott and exhibitions and programs manager Jack McGilvray, “From Underfoot: Breaking Through Surface and Ground” unites artists Caroline Carlsmith, Jenny Day, Carrie Dickason, Leah Dyjak, Anja Marais, Marianne McGrath and Ronen Raz in a group show that aims to illustrate “the relationships between the terrestrial and the human” via photographs, quilts, ceramics and sculptures made from discarded materials.

Opening a nostalgic, slightly bittersweet window into Gary Sweeney’s family history, “A Manhattan Beach Memoir” is essentially a recreation of a photographic installation the beloved local artist plastered on his parents’ longtime Manhattan Beach home (1945-2015) as a creative sendoff before it was demolished to make way for a development.

Guest-curated by Dr. Angelika Jansen in celebration of the addition of San Antonio’s new Sister City, Darmstadt, Germany, the exhibitions “Veo Mis Huesos” (a sonic ode to Mexico City) and “As Far as the Eye Can See” (a collaboration with local performers) take shape in video installations by German artists Thomas Georg Blank and Mila Hundertmark, respectively.

Free, 6-9pm Thu Jun 7-Fri Jun 8, Blue Star Contemporary, 116 Blue Star, (210) 227-6960, bluestarcontemporary.org.
