In María de Buenos Aires, Astor Piazzolla’s nuevo tango style merges with Horacio Ferrer’s surreal libretto to create an operetta like few others. Fifty years after its premiere in Buenos Aires, Alamo City Opera is staging María’s tragic story in downtown San Antonio, starring Catalina Cuervo, who has performed as María in a record number of performances of the operetta.

The story follows its titular protagonist, a sex worker in Buenos Aires, who is drawn further into the city’s underworld by the seductive power of the tango. María ultimately dies, and her Shadow wanders the now otherworldly streets of the city in the second act. The operetta features an unusual cast of characters — including brothel keepers, a duende, psychoanalysts and pasta makers — and is accompanied by an orchestra with unorthodox instrumentation such as the accordion-like bandoneon.

$15-$50, 8pm Sat Jun 9, 2:30pm Sun Jun 10, Buena Vista Theatre, UTSA Downtown Campus, 501 W. César E. Chávez Blvd., (210) 314-6696, alamocityopera.org.
