Nodding with its title to the often-symbolic natural history compendiums popularized in the Middle Ages, Clamp Light’s “The Bestiary” creatively explores “our shared anthropological past, and creates an imagined anthropocenic future using humor, narrative and lush imagery.”

Curated by educator and Clamp Light resident artist Sarah Fox, the show pairs animal-centric works by Houston-based Terri Foltz-Fox and San Antonio’s own Angelica Raquel. Boasting 30-plus years experience in art and education, Foltz-Fox draws inspiration from both “anthropological stories and sacred object- making” in the creation of quirky yet expertly rendered ceramics and mixed-media sculptures. Currently working toward an MFA at UTSA, Raquel works between watercolor and sculpture to address topics ranging from the commodification of animals to “forced evolution” via selective breeding.

In tandem with the opening reception, Clamp Light will unveil a new project by muralist-in-residence Jordon Clough (whose work deals with “the synthesis of visual memory”); and a “live animal drawing” session led by Raquel is scheduled for July 21 (1-3pm).

Free, opening reception 6-9pm Fri July 13, on view by appointment through July 31, Clamp Light Artist Studios & Gallery, 1704 Blanco Road, (832) 259-3530, clamplightsa.com.
