This weekend, Mantle Art Space, one of our favorite local galleries north of downtown, will open a new exhibition of work by San Antonio artist Cassie Gnehm. The exhibit, comprised entirely of new oil paintings, finds Gnehm confronting the male gaze in ways that are at once striking and playful.

“For centuries men have controlled the way women’s bodies have been represented in art and culture,” the artist’s statement explains. These paintings, all featuring women (many of them riffs on historical subjects), “comment on the male gaze of artists throughout art history while overlaying features of contemporary women.” In offering her own vision, often opposed in key ways to the tired tropes traced by male artists, Gnehm performs an act of reclaiming, liberating and cleansing.

Free, Sat July 28, 6-9pm, Mantle Art Space, 714 Fredericksburg Road, (210) 971-4740,
