The biographical drama Blaze – about late country-western singer/songwriter and San Antonio native Blaze Foley – doesn’t officially hit theaters here until August 31. But the hype is starting now.

On Wednesday, musician and breakout actor Ben Dickey, who portrays Foley in the upcoming film, will perform an acoustic set covering a number of Foley’s original songs like “Clay Pigeons,” “If I Could Only Fly” and “Big Cheeseburgers and Good French Fries.” After the concert, Dickey will stick around for a fireside chat and answer questions from the audience.

The following night, Dickey will be in attendance for a special free screening of Blaze, which was co-written and directed by Academy Award-nominated actor and screenwriter Ethan Hawke (Before Midnight, Boyhood). The film explores Foley’s career in the ’70s and ’80s, his relationship with girlfriend Sybil Rosen (Alia Shawkat) and his drug and alcohol addiction. In 1989, Foley was shot and killed by the son of one of his friends after an altercation. A Q&A with Dickey (moderated by yours truly) will take place after the screening.

Concert: free, 7:30pm Wed Aug 22, The Pigpen, 106 Pershing Ave, (210) 267-9136, thepigpensa.com. Screening: free, 7pm Thu Aug 23, Santikos Bijou, 4522 Fredericksburg Road, (210) 734-4552, santikos.com.
