This year H-E-B has stepped up its concern for the health of its customers and taken an interest in getting San Antonio fit and healthy. First the grocery store chain introduced "Healthy at H-E-B" -- a line of specialty items including vegetarian, gluten-free, lactose-free, whole grains, and weight management foods. The store has certainly made it easier for buyers to locate nutritious ingredients and prepared meals on the shelves, addressing a common complaint among shoppers. Despite criticism that the grocer plays favorites in higher-income neighborhoods, stocking those stores with the freshest foods and organics, Healthy at H-E-B is a refreshing display of corporate responsibility (or maybe just good marketing). Last month H-E-B also launched "Slim Down with H-E-B" -- a weight loss challenge in which contestants work hard to improve their body mass index and weight, blood cholesterol, and glucose levels. Contestant will be vying for a grand prize of $10,000 as well as other prizes like $5,000. Today (February 29)  is the last day to enter the Slim Down with H-E-B weight loss challenge and all entries must be received by March 5. Although the motivator may be money, getting healthy and into a wellness program is a shining example of just how effective we expect good old-fashioned exercise and mindful eating to be.
