Shot of the Week: Zombie Brains!

They're as good as they look.

Did you honestly think we only had one spooky shoot for you after last week's Skull White Russians?

How little do you know us, dear readers. This week, we whipped up a batch of brains for all the zombie lovers out there. Make a few in advance of this week's episode of The Walking Dead!

The recipes are via That's Nerdalicious with a few minor tweaks. We traded raspberries for cherries in both the liqueur and the brain filling.

The hardest part was finding the brain mold, but any bowl should do the trick at this point. We also used finger molds and topped the shots with cherry preserves. Because YOLO.

Brain gelatin

5 ounces (150ml) 100-proof vodka

5 ounces (150ml) hazelnut liqueur

5 ounces (150ml) cherry liqueur

3 envelopes unflavored gelatin

1-1/2 cups water, boiling

14 oz (420ml) sweetened condensed milk

Filling:

2-1/2 pints fresh cherries

2/3 to 3/4 cups granulated sugar

4 tablespoons cornstarch

3 tablespoons cherry liqueur

1 teaspoon grated lemon zest

1 teaspoon lemon juice, freshly squeezed

Directions for Filling: Combine the cherries, sugar, cornstarch, cherry liqueur, lemon zest and lemon juice in a saucepan. The amount of sugar that you put into the mixture will vary according to the sweetness of your cherries, so taste the mixture for sweetness before you cook it. Cook the mixture until the cherries are softened, which should take 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally with a plastic spoon. Remove the filling from the heat and allow it to cool completely.

For Brains: Pour the vodka and liqueurs into a large measuring cup. Sprinkle the gelatin over the liquors and allow it to bloom for 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in the boiling water with a whisk until the gelatin has completely dissolved. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature. Stir in the sweetened condensed milk. Spray the brain molds lightly with nonstick cooking spray. Fill the mold cavities halfway full of the brain gelatin mixture. Cover the remaining gelatin with plastic wrap and set it aside to use later (DON'T REFRIGERATE). Refrigerate the molds for 1 hour or until the molds have set.

Remove the brain molds from the refrigerator and place 1 teaspoon of raspberry filling on top of the gelatin in each mold cavity. Depending on the size of your brain molds, you can place up to 1 tablespoon of filling over the gelatin, but do not allow the filling to touch the walls of the mold cavities. Pour the remaining gelatin over the filling in each mold so that the filling is completely covered. Chill the filled molds for 4 hours or overnight until the gelatin has completely set.

Ease out using a spoon and display. The shots are nutty and sweet, and just hella fun to look at.

Bonus recipe! Jäger Bomb Jell-O Shots (decidedly easier than the brains)

3/4 Cup of Jägermeister®

1 1/4 Cup of Red Bull® Energy Drink

2 Envelopes of Knox® Unflavored Gelatin

Directions: Pour 3/4 cups of Jägermeister into a bowl or container. Sprinkle the gelatin over the liqueur. Let it stand for about one minute. The Jägermeister must be at room temperature. In a pan, boil the Red Bull (we used a microwave) and pour it into the Jägermeister with gelatin. Mix well until the gelatin completely dissolves. Wash a bat shaped baking mold and dry it. Spray the inside of the mold with a small amount of vegetable oil. Wipe any excess oil. Pour the jagerbomb gelatin into the mold and place it in the refrigerator. Let chill overnight, or at least 4 hours. Can't find bat molds? Use a bat cookie cutter to shape the shots.
