H-E-B Adds Carb-Aware Label on National Diabetes Day

In an effort to continue to help customers who are watching their nutritional intake, H-E-B is launching a new label to make it a bit easier to recognize good-for-you foods.

The supermarket chains plans to introduce the Carb Aware label on Thursday, November 14, World Diabetes Day.

The purple Carb Aware icon signifies items contain 0-15 grams of carbs per serving. The icon supports the diabetes exchange system, which signifies that 15 grams of carbs equals one carbohydrate choice.

In addition to the Carb Aware icon, there will be vegan, vegetarian and whole grain icons to make it helpful for customers seeking items to fit their nutritional needs.

The vegan icon will exclude meat, fish and any animal-derived products, like eggs and dairy. The vegetarian one will exclude meat and fish, but will include animal-derived products. And as for the whole grain, the first ingredient must list whole grain, excluding water, for the product to be labeled as whole grain.
