There's a Fifth Rooftop Bar in the Works for SA

Sprinkle & Company Architects received a rubber stamp from San Antonio’s Historic and Design Review Commission to proceed with development of a rooftop bar atop the Fairmount Hotel. The commission approved construction plans during its July 19 meeting.

Plans call for a one-story, shaded bar to be built on the south end of the historic Downtown hotel, according to a San Antonio Express-News report. Elevator access, mobile seating and an enclosure for storage and restrooms will be available to patrons who desire to enjoy a refreshing cocktail while gazing into the Hemisfair entrance across the street. We can already see the TripAdvisor reviews on that view.

The Fairmount’s rooftop bar will be the fifth to operate in the city, and third in the Downtown area, joining Paramour Bar, which opened in 2015, and the upcoming rooftop bar atop the Light Building.

The Lush and Burnhouse rooftop bars are located at the Ridge Shopping Center on the city’s Northwest side.

Sprinkle & Company representatives could not be reached for additional details on the project.

With five soon-to-be operating rooftop bars in San Antonio, it is clear as a Mint Peach Fizz that the city has to play a lot of catch up if it wants to be considered a prime roof top bar destination in Texas, much less America.

Austin’s The Wet Deck at W and Houston’s Rosemont were recently designated by Thrillist as two of the 21 best rooftop bars in America, joining an elite list of destinations from New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and other major cities.

Based on Sprinkle and Company’s proven track record in architecture, they will almost certainly create an attractive destination at the Fairmount that could be in contention for “Best Rooftop in America” in the future.

Sprinkle earned numerous awards for its architecture of several municipal and education, residential, commercial and religious establishments between 1986 and 2010. They were most recently recognized for their work on the elegant Silo Restaurant in the July/August 2010 edition of Texas Architects.
