Hot Joy Is Hosting A Late Night Hot Chicken Pop-Up This Weekend

Posted By on Tue, Jul 31, 2018 at 2:56 PM

Chi Chi Birds Hot Chicken will pop-up inside Hot Joy for a late-night hot chicken party this weekend.

Launched by grade school pals, Caleb Lott and Luke Gonzalez, Chi Chi Birds Hot Chicken is the brainchild of Lott, who recently relocated back to San Antonio after several years in Colorado and California.

Though he cut his teeth in fine dining and later food trucks and personal chef gigs in those states, 25-year-old Lott gained a love for fiery hot chicken in California. He decided to open up a similar concept in San Antonio because he missed those unique flavors.

Chi Chi (Lott's nickname and a slang for breast) held its first pop-up in Lott's dad's backyard, but eventually booked a gig at El Luchador on Roosevelt Ave.

"Our motto is 'spread love eat chicken,' because we wanted to bring people together over Chi Chi's. There's always a party outside the booth when we're there," Lott said.

Chef Jon Philpot and pastry chef Jess Philpot of Hot Joy were Chi Chi's first customers at El Luchador ever. The couple eventually invited the friends to lunch and now they'll bring the heat to Asian eatery's kitchen.

The hot chicken is available in mild, medium, hot and ultra hot (with the addition of ghost peppers), and the servings are also paired with fresh coleslaw, house-made sauces and hand-cut fries.

Chi Chi Birds Hot Chicken will take over Hot Joy from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday, August 2 to Sunday, August 5.
