San Antonio Chefs Cooking Up Diverse Array of Cuisines for Taste the Dream Gala Benefitting East Side

San Antonio chefs are uniting to foster development on the East Side through Saturday's Taste the Dream gala.

Hosted by San Antonio for Growth on the Eastside (SAGE), the gala at the Witte Museum will feature local food luminaries Jason Dady, Cariño Cortez and more. The chefs will serve up dishes that spotlight cuisines from around the world in honor of Martin Luther King Jr's dream for equality.

"Cuisines give people an opportunity to explore the world around them and learn about different cultures without needing to travel or have a passport," said Donald Mitchell, owner of Chef Don's Catering. "Food has a way of bringing people together regardless of religious or ethnic differences, and that is the beauty of it. Its ability to unite without discrimination can result in the building of friendships, cross-cultural understandings, and create a more culturally diverse and accepting community."

Chef Angello Gordon of Jamaica Jamaica agrees that tasting new cuisines helps make people more accepting of cultures unlike their own.

"Having different cuisines illustrates some of the best qualities about a culture," Gordon said. "It invites you to be open minded about experiencing those different cultures as well."

Food stations will be set up throughout the Witte's Mays Family Center so attendees can sample bites while mingling with friends and chefs alike. The gala will also include live music, specialty craft cocktails and an open bar.

Tickets are $150 each and available here. Proceeds benefit SAGE, which works toward the economic development of the East Side.

"San Antonio's East Side and black community offer another perspective on the diverse cultural makeup of what makes San Antonio today," Mitchell said.
