Travis Park and the city of San Antonio will be hosting Movies by Moonlight with this week’s presentation of Disney and Pixar’s 2011 flick Cars 2 featuring voices of Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy. The champion racecar Lightning McQueen is back as he and his pal Mater journey overseas to compete in the World Grand Prix race in Europe. The Pirates! Band of Misfits
Director Peter Lord’s 2012 animated comedy The Pirates! Band of Misfits is Santikos Theaters’ next feature presentation for the summer movie series. Featuring the voices of Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Hugh Grant and others, the film follows a pirate captain and his crew on an adventurous race against his rowdy rivals for the treasured pirate of the year award. The film will be presented at Santikos’ Silverado 16, Northwest 14, Rialto and Mayan Palace theaters. Free tickets are available three days before each screening. Summer Dance Hall Series
The Pearl presents its Summer Dance Hall Series, at the historic Pearl Stable, with a lineup of music representing the rich history of South Texas dance hall music. San Antonio jazz legend Doc Watkins will curate the series, which highlights a variety of genres (from South Texas swing to Polka) and kicks off Wednesday with a performance by The Lone Star Swingbillies. Nancy Oakes Book Signing
The Twig Book Shop presents a book signing and discussion with author and columnist Nancy Oakes in support of her latest work Return of Sophia, Mother of the Universe. “Rights of Mother Earth”
Esperanza Peace and Justice Center hosts a presentation by Maria de la Torre entitled “La Mujer, Continuadora de los Tiempos/Women, Keepers of Time.” De la Torre is a Kichwa elder from Ecuador and will discuss the “rights of mother earth” with a focus on the feminine world and roles as the keepers of time according to Andean philosophies.
