Summer 2016 Artpace International Artist In Residence Exhibit

This week, Artpace's Summer 2016 International Artist-in-Residence exhibition opens featuring artists Juan William Chávez (Saint Louis, MO), Andy Coolquitt (Austin, TX), and Rachel Maclean (Glasgow, Scotland) – selected by guest curator Dominic Molon. The exhibition is open from July 14th until Sept. 11th. Admission to Artpace is free and open to the public.
"Party Tricks"

Party Tricks is an exhibition of sculptures and paintings by Houston-based artist Melinda Laszczynski. The sculptural works in the show combine traditional materials and those associated with celebration or dress-up that become abstractions of the body, while simultaneously being seductive and discomforting. The paintings in the show are indulgent in tactility, using shiny, bright surfaces and thick textured layers of paint that reflect the viewer and surroundings and activate movement within the paintings. These works highlight both the desire for escape into another world, and a feminist critique of abstraction.

Occasionally, a museum dusts off some pieces from its permanent collection and brings them out of the archives. Such is the case with SAMA’s vibrant new Carlos Mérida exhibit, which runs through January. In the collection of nearly 30 works, folks can get to know the Guatemalan-born Mérida, who, despite his pioneering works — which first explored the symbol-rich history of Mayan culture and later embraced surrealism and geometric abstractionism — remains a lesser-known master than his friend and contemporary Diego Rivera.
