Since its launch in 2007 with Absolut New Orleans, Absolut Vodka’s Limited Editions Portfolio has bottled up the distinct flavors of Los Angeles, Boston, Brooklyn, San Francisco, Miami and Chicago. Unveiled this week, Absolut Texas (the brand’s first and only state-inspired flavor) features notes of cucumber and a spicy Serrano kick and comes in a covetable bottle designed by Houston-born, San Antonio-based artist Cruz Ortiz, the creative mind behind the quirky posters for the Pearl’s Échale! Latino Music Estyles concert series.
Known for works fusing “classical icons with symbols of contemporary pop culture such as taco trucks, canned beans and an alter ego named SPAZTEK,” Ortiz (who works between print, performance, and film and loaned his talents to the Current’s Día de los Muertos cover back in 2009) adorned the bottle with a “cosmic caballero” cowboy boot and a stylized West Texas landscape and even transformed Abolut’s circular logo by putting a cowboy hat on founder Lars Olsson Smith.
As an added incentive to pick up a bottle of the “instant Southwestern staple” (which retails for $19.99), the limited-edition package includes recipes for a number of Texas-inspired cocktails such as the Heel-Spur Martini, Hill Country, Rodeo Ride and Showdown.
