PS we love you Parchman Stremmel Galleries at 203 N. Presa, home to exhibitions of refined local and national art for 10 years, is leaving downtown. The new storefront, which will open sometime after Contemporary Art Month, will be in Olmos Park. Otis Parchman notes that, as a general rule, approximately 85 percent of art sold is sold to folks on vacation. But during the convention facilities expansion, he says, San Antonio lost the demographic that shop at galleries and he doesn't think it's coming back anytime soon. Now that 95 percent of PS's business is in-town, they need to be in a more accessible location for local traffic. Like Brad Braune before them, who held his final show in his space on East Commerce this past winter `see "Artifacts," December 24-30, 2003`, PS has felt the effect of the flat rate parking fees implemented at the Riverbend Parking Garage.
Blossom But there's one last hurrah at the old Parchman Stremmel space. New paintings by Nate Cassie are on view through the end of July. As part of Twisting and Turning: Abstract Painting Now, curated by Lily Wei and exhibited at Blue Star Art Space last summer, Cassie exhibited large wooden panels in pastel colors. Titled Flower Garden, the panels were covered with strips of white and gray paint that he applied according to variations on the Fibonocci series - the golden ratio that governs much of mother nature, from the measurements of our skeletal structures to the spacing and frequency of leaves and petals. Cassie's new work builds on this foundation, adding organic ovals and thick tic-tac-toe boxes. Like Mark Schlesinger, Cassie is focused on method and material, but for him it is a means to abstract content rather than to excise it. Call 266-8752 for more info.
Bloom Recent UTSA grad Felice Koenig - whose stellar thesis show featured hanging tapestries made of vinyl paint and three-dimensional eggs and cubes covered in intricate, obsessive circles - has been selected as the 2004 SoHo-Chelsea International Art Competition, Chelsea Gallery Competition Winner. Her solo show will be on view July 29-August 18 at Agora Gallery in New York. Koenig relocated to Oregon last year, and it's a shame we haveto travel to the far coasts to see her beautiful and provocative work. For more info, call 212-226-4151.
Garland Congratulations, too, to ArtPace founder and patron Linda Pace, who has been named a 2004 Contemporary Legend in the arts patron category by the Dallas Center for Contemporary Art. Pace will be fêted, along with Dallas City Councilmember Veletta Forsythe Lill and artist Linnea Glatt, at a dinner at the Center on September 8. Call 214-821-2522 for more info.
