The school year is starting or gearing up, yet it’s still hot as blazes, and until September, there is a bit of a lull in art land. But wait, I can hear the rumblings of the creative machine now — it’s time for auditions and getting in on the ground floor as an arts volunteer on a crew or at one of our venerable institutions. Here are a few of the opportunities floating about this week …
At 10 a.m. Thursday, August 18, you can check out the docent program at San Antonio Museum of Art to see if it’s for you. My eyes lit up when I saw the infogram appear — this museum program runs for two years. “The first year is spent training to become a docent and learning about SAMA. The second year is spent sharing this knowledge with museum visitors through tours and educational programming.” A year of education? Yowza, if I wasn’t already covering the beat, I’d check it out. A second preview session will be held Tuesday August 23 at 6 p.m.
Bihl Haus Arts is looking for “professional and emerging artists and concerned citizens” to participate in “GLOW: The Nuclear Show,” an art exhibition that will open this October. Here’s what to send: “all media dealing with local, regional, and global nuclear power/energy related issues. This world-wide concern is open for debate, discussion, and expression in an interactive, educational exhibition.” Due date, September 16. So, you’re an artist and would love to contribute to this and that, but you got your own thing. And you’re broke. Check this out: The Idea Fund is seeking 10 Texas-based artist-generated projects to award a $4,000 grant. Curious? This re-granting program is administered through Aurora Picture Show, DiverseWorks ArtSpace, and Project Row Houses, and funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. That’s what I’m talkin’ ’bout.
What’s hot in art land? One word — printmaking. Volunteers are signing up now to help make “the largest mono-print in Texas.” The event will happen September 17 at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center (in the parking lot), and they’re using a steamroller to do it.
