Fans of humorist, comedian, author and radio contributor David Sedaris, and those interested in literary canon-caliber, postmodern wit and insight in general, are in for a treat this weekend, as the author will visit to present all new readings, participate in a Q&A, and sign books.
Sedaris’ career took off like a squirrel chasing a chipmunk after the airing of his radio essay “SantaLand Diaries” back in 1992. Since then Sedaris has written tons of pieces for radio and print, and has published more than 10 books, including such wildly popular titles as Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and Squirrel Meets Chipmunk. Sedaris’ style of nonfiction/creative memoir has drawn criticism from purists who have insisted that he shouldn’t be able to call his work nonfiction if he takes creative liberties, but the general reading public hardly cares about that. And why should they?
Whatever the hell you choose to call Sedaris’ work, it’s hard to deny that his penetrating intellect mixed with his explosive and often self-excoriating sense of humor make for material that is, for its ability to approach the spectrum of contemporary American life in interesting and productive ways, as valuable as anything that could pass full-on fact-checking.
