Alternatively titled That Time I Got Kidnapped, comic Jamie Campbell’s one-person storytelling show is based around a true tale of child abuse, bullying, juvenile delinquency and hair metal — parts of which, obviously, are funnier than others. The blog posts detailing the story on Campbell’s site open with a plea to his family members not to look at them, which makes for a pretty good indication of how serious some of Campbell’s childhood recollections can get: “If you stay here and read this,” says one such disclaimer, “that’s fine, but we’re not talking about it. Cool? Cool.” But, one post also includes the line, “This was a whole different type of Boner City, and I most certainly was not the mayor.”
Named one of the “Best of Fest” shows at the Kansas City Fringe Fest, Devil on the Wall begins a national tour with a two-show stop in San Antonio (March 3 and 10). Campbell, who’s appeared in
Chicago Fire and in the feature film
Sex Ain’t Love, straddles the line between comedy and personal tragedy with a story that’s only his to tell.
$10, Sat March 3, 8pm, Bexar Stage, 1203 Camden St., (312) 971-7252, bexarstage.com.
