Game of Thrones fans, it's time for a road trip! Texas A&M University in College Station announced today an upcoming visit from George R.R. Martin, author of the widely popular
A Song and Ice of Fire series who just needs to hurry up already and finish books six and seven. The author will a gift the university with a first edition of J.R.R. Tolkein's
The Hobbit. The copy of the classic fantasy novel will be the 5 millionth volume in the university libraries' collection.
Martin will read from and present
The Hobbit, which features illustrations drawn by Tolkien, during a free and open-to-the public ceremony scheduled at 11 a.m. on February 27 in Texas A&M's Rudder Auditorium. So if you're a fan of Tolkein or the
Game of Thrones book or television series, it might be worth making to drive.
The Tolkein first edition will be housed the university's Cushing Memorial Library and Archives as part of its
Science Fiction and Fantasy Research Collection. Martin has previously donated his personal collection of manuscripts, books and memorabilia to Texas A&M, which were put on display as part of exhibit titled "Deeper Than Swords" in the spring of 2013. Vulture recently reported that
a major Game of Thrones fan theory was shot down by Martin in the original manuscript of
A Dance With Dragons, which included handwritten notes between the fantasy author and his editor. We won't say which theory, but you can head over to Vulture to find out for yourself.
Incidentally, beginning tomorrow
the final two episodes of HBO's Game of Thrones series will be screened at the Santikos Palladium IMAX on its large-format screen. The limited showings, which are scheduled to last one week, will include an exclusive trailer for the show's upcoming season five.
