The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, as most of our readers will probably know well by now, issued its most dismaying report yet a few weeks back. The report, which in no uncertain terms says that we have 12 years to get our collective shit together or get ready to face crisis after crisis, ought to lead to an unprecedented uptick in engagement with environmental issues from all corners of the globe. Like, we are probably going to have to do a hell of a lot better than banning plastic straws or other such baby steps that might have been appropriate if we’d started taking this problem seriously when we should have — way back in the 1970s.
Dr. Gretchen Daily is the kind of person who we should all be listening to at this point. The renowned environmental scientist, conservation expert/advocate and author, who directs Stanford University’s Center for Conservation Biology and who co-founded the Natural Capital Project, will bring her timely wisdom to town this week. Entitled “A New Business Model for People and Nature,” her talk, like her work in general, is as comprehensive as it is practical — engaging with policy as much as science, envisioning new models for business and society that could help us manage (or perhaps narrowly avoid) the worst climate change-based potentialities.
