Dave Sims, San Antonio filmmaker and co-founder/president of Astrobleme Films, is on his way to France this week. Cavern, his 15-minute drama/thriller, was one of 2,448 short films from around the world accepted into the Court Métrage (Short Film Corner) at the 69th annual Cannes Film Festival. This means Cavern will be accessible online through the Digital Film Library to all festival-goers from May 16-22.
Last year, there were over 26,000 views in the Short Film Corner during Cannes.
Along with having his film available online, Sims, 42, who studied at the London Film School and currently works as the global culture branding lead at Rackspace, will get the opportunity to attend workshops, round-table discussions and conferences and network with global industry professionals.
Cavern tells the story of a young woman (Erika Davies) who finds an unconscious man (Nicolas Valdez) lying on the terrain of the Mojave Desert. In an attempt to save the man from imminent death, the woman decides to drag him to safety, but loses her way and becomes lost in the barren landscape. The film made its Texas premiere at the 49th Annual Worldfest International Film Festival in Houston last month where it won a Remi Award. It was also a finalist at the 46th Annual USA Film Festival in Dallas, Texas.
“We’re attending [Cannes] with the goal of gaining distribution for Cavern in stateside and international markets, as well as to cultivate relationships among agents, financiers and other production companies to get future projects off the ground,” said Sims in a press release. “I want to do my part to continue to put San Antonio on the map as a city ripe with talent.”
