Luminaria was moved further north to the area surrounding the Southwest School of Art in 2014.
On Thursday, March 12th, Luminaria’s Board of Directors took action to cement the future of the annual celebration by naming Kathy Armstrong as its first executive director.
A casualty of its own unstable identity in the past, the Festival of Lights—now embarking on its eighth year—promises to demonstrate a newfound sense of direction under Armstrong’s experienced tutelage.

“To continue to build on the success of Luminaria, we need to institute day to day management, “ expressed Board President Liz Tullis. “Kathy brings the exact mix we need to the table. She has a strong arts background as well as solid management discipline.”

Having served as the Southwest School of Art’s Director of Exhibitions for nearly two decades, Armstrong is expected to advance the organization’s plans for development upon her official appointment to the position in May. Until then, she eagerly awaits the challenge of synthesizing Luminaria’s artistic and communal facets into a long-lasting celebration of San Antonio’s cultural crossroads.

“It is time to shine a light on the dynamic, complex works of art created by our actors, performers, musicians, filmmakers, and artists,” said Armstrong in a press release.
This year Luminaria is slated for the dates of October 23 and 24. An open call for projects will be announced soon.
