NOTES ON ASHES
I watched fire
those days
the men kicked
about in their boots.
I watched their boots.
I watched their boots
dance with flames—
ostrich, alligator.
I wanted to tease.
I wanted to tease fire.
I wanted to run
my finger over the fickle
head, stroke the hot
breath like a kitten’s
delicate skull.
