Puro pinche roller derby action arrives Sunday! SUNDAY! Sunday! in San Antonio

It’s that time again, folks. Puro pinche derby is set to take over Saytown yet again, effectively wiping out any lingering winter doldrums. First up are the Alamo City Rollergirls, opening their sixth season in SA in a bout with Beaumont’s Spindletop crew at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 13, at the Rollercade, 223 Recoleta. Tickets are $12 in advance, $14 at the door, and kids 10 and under are always free. PR and Event Coordinator Jennifer Moreno (aka Juno Juantes #429) said fans should expect a higher level of athletic competition at the rink this year — Las Tejanas (the ACRG’s sole team) have been training exceptionally hard during the off-season because the 2011 schedule boasts the largest number of Women’s Flat Track Derby Association opponents the ACRG has had since the league’s conception.

“The tougher the teams are that we play, the better we get,” said Moreno. “We don’t want easy wins. We want a challenge. So it’s gonna be a hard season, but we’ll take on as much as we can.”

Moreno said the raucous game day atmosphere (live bands! beer!) that loyalists have grown to love will remain, but she encouraged interested newbies to show up and learn about the evolving sport from the front row. “It’s not just looking cute on skates,” said Moreno. “These women are real athletes.” Check out the ACRG’s season schedule at alamocityrollergirls.com.

We’d be remiss not to mention that a second roller derby troupe has sprung up in San Antonio this season. San Antonio Roller Derby is a brand-new league that has been honing their skills for a year. They are currently undergoing the application process to become a WFTDA apprentice league and, subsequently, a full member of the Association. SARD’s inaugural season will kick off at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 20, at Car-Vel Skate Center, 6807 Bandera, when they face the El Paso Tex Pistols. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door, kids eight and under free. Visit sanantoniorollerderby.com for more info and the season schedule.
