“We weren’t last in Texas, but our score showed room for improvement,” Castro told the San Antonio Express-News.
Castro wasted no time in taking action and hired Greenup, who also serves as his Senior Policy Advisor, to keep tabs on all things LGBT.
SACurrent: Tell us a bit about the positon.
Greenup: My purpose with respect to this role is to serve as a direct point of contact that members of the LGBT community can approach, should they need city support/assistance. I am also here to communicate with the community on behalf of the Mayor's Office.
SACurrent: What are your goals?
Greenup: The LGBT Community experienced a tremendous victory last year with the adoption of domestic partnership benefit coverage for city employees. It is my hope that in the coming year we will work on updating the City's Non-Discrimination Ordinance to include protection of members of the LGBT community with regard to city employment, contracting, fair housing, boards and commission appointments and public accommodations. I also plan to strengthen the relationship that we have with the LGBT Chamber of Commerce to support local businesses that are owned by members of the community.
SACurrent: What steps will you be taking to achieve this?
Greenup: Right now, the most important function that I can be doing is outreach to the community. I need to ensure that members of the community know that I am available and feel comfortable enough to approach me with an issue/idea/suggestion.
SACurrent: What is the biggest obstacle you're facing?
Greenup:We are fortunate to live in a city where the vast majority of people welcome diversity, although I fully anticipate some people not really understanding why there is a need for this role. I hope that those who are skeptical will allow me the opportunity to demonstrate the need for this appointment.
We're looking forward to your work, Mr. Liaison!
