Originally slated to fall on consecutive days, NALACquerx Network’s celebration of the Winter Solstice (which marks the shortest day of the year and happens to coincide with a full moon and a meteor shower on the longest night of the year — so don’t forget to look up) and Presa House’s art-centric Holiday Gift Swap (a tradition three years strong that’s open to artists and non-artists alike) got rolled into one by gallery co-directors Rigoberto Luna and Jenelle Esparza. “I just married the two events,” Luna told us. “The more the merrier.”
Guests wishing to partake in the (entirely optional) gift swap are invited to bring a print, painting, drawing, photograph, sculpture, mixed-media work or craft project to contribute to what’s sure to be an eclectic assortment of holiday loot. Emceed by Jason “PopGuy” Ybarra, the hybrid celebration promises refreshments courtesy of Big Bend Brewing Co. (while supplies last), light snacks (potluck dishes welcome) and beats by DJ Hinoxosa.
While hanging around the homey gallery, don’t miss the colorful works on view in the group show “Degradado (Gradient).” Guest curated by Coka Trevino of the Austin-based multimedia arts organization The Projecto, the exhibition combines works by artists from two distinct communities Trevino holds dear: Austin (Christina Moser and Matthew Bonifacio Rodriguez) and Monterrey, Mexico (Patricia Carrington, Ernesto Walker and Greometría).
