Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story

buddy holly

Conceived by agent/producer Laurie Mansfield, penned by writer Alan Janes, and given the green light by Sir Paul McCartney (who owns the rights to the entire Buddy Holly catalog) Buddy — The Buddy Holly Story ushered in a new theatrical genre, the jukebox musical. Packed with nearly 30 songs including “That’ll Be the Day,” “Peggy Sue,” and “Not Fade Away,” Buddy chronicles the Lubbock-born rock pioneer’s short reign by recreating key moments in his life — from his fateful feud with Decca Records and marriage to Maria Elena Santiago to a gig at the Apollo Theater with The Crickets (the first white group to ever perform there) and his final concert at Clear Lake, Iowa’s Surf Ballroom with the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens. Jonathan Pennington and Jovi Lee Gonzalez co-direct the “feel-good rave up” at the Cameo. $15-$33; 4pm Sun, Nov 4; Cameo Theare, 1123 E Commerce, (210) 212-5454, cameocenter.com.
