Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: Fantasyland

fantasyland

Nearly three decades before Andy Warhol was working magic in the windows of Bonwit Teller or Joel Schumacher was upping his ante as visual director of Henri Bendel, Joske’s had established itself as “the biggest store in the biggest state.” In keeping with its reputation, the five-level flagship on Commerce and Alamo took holiday shopping over the top with Fantasyland, a wonderland inhabited by animatronic creatures, a massive toy train, a forest of Christmas trees, a 30-foot Santa replica on the roof, plus a “real” version who entered the store via chimney. This holiday season, the ITC remembers Fantasyland with an archival exhibition guests can complement by sharing photos and memories on Facebook.com/InstituteofTexanCultures or Twitter, @TexanCultures. $6-$8; 9am-5pm Mon, Nov 26; Institute of Texan Cultures, 801 E César Chávez, (210) 458-2300, texancultures.com.
