True veterans of San Antonio’s theater scene, playwrights Mark Leonard and Thomas Masinter met as Trinity University students circa 1972 and have since collaborated on “about a half-dozen” plays, including the well-received “cajun voodoo musical” Fire on the Bayou.

“No sacred cow is left un-barbecued” in their new “farcical musical parody” Gladiators in Love. While it drops nods to iconic films ranging from Spartacus and Hercules to Brokeback Mountain and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the new play is essentially a dramatic fan letter to Steve Reeves, a late bodybuilder and beefcake superstar of the “swords and sandals” era of cinema.

In addition to the promise of fresh material from the “local award-winning legends” (who admit they probably “should be ashamed of themselves ... but are not”), this initial semi-staged reading enlists the talents of eight local actors and vocalists who’ll embody mythological deities and Roman courtesans, not to mention a pupu platter of pop-culture phenoms both loved and hated — Daisy Duke, the Marx Brothers, Dom DeLuise and Donald Trump among them. Word to the wise: Gladiators in Love is decidedly “not for the prudish or easily offended.”

$10, 8pm Fri Aug 24-Sat Aug 25, The Overtime Theater, 5409 Bandera Road, Suite 205, (210) 557-7562.
