If you find yourself in need of a stiff jolt of adrenaline, but don’t want the actual chance to meet your maker while getting said jolt, then I’ve got something for you. Wimberley Zipline Adventures is located, appropriately enough, in the scenic hamlet of Wimberley.

They offer visitors a way to glimpse the majesty of the Texas Hill Country while hurtling over 30 miles per hour through the air after taking a running (or walking if need be) leap into a void dozens of feet off the ground while a harness and cable keep you secure.

Wimberley Zipline Adventures offers 10 zip line courses, which range in length from 150 feet to about 900 feet—totaling close to one mile of pure zip line traveling. When you arrive, you are fitted with your gear, which includes a harness, hard hat and gloves. You can also rent video glasses to record yourself either looking all kinds of awesome or screaming like a newborn.

The guides/instructors give you a crash course (they call it “flight school”) on zip lining a small, working line. They show you the finer points of sitting down comfortably in your harness and, most importantly, how to stop yourself.

There is a bit of strenuous uphill hiking involved in getting from line to line, so come prepared. It isn’t all easy, but it’s totally worth it in the end. Plus, the guides do a good job of pointing out local points of interest along the way.

The highest cable reaches out more than 100 feet above the Wimberley Valley (this is currently the second-highest course of its kind in the state of Texas). If you’re brave enough to look down, you can see the canopy of lush trees and creeks that crisscross the property. It’s a literal bird’s-eye view.

Touring the total course takes about one-and-a-half to two hours. There are age and weight requirements, mostly aimed at children, so call ahead if you plan to bring any little ones.

Wimberley Zipline Adventures is located at 300 Winn Valley Drive in Wimberley. The tours cost $79.45 per person (plus tax) and a deposit is required. They offer four daily tours during the week and an additional fifth tour on weekends. For details, call (512) 847-9990 or visit wimberleyzipline.com.
