Han Van Meegeren, a struggling Dutch artist, makes a fortune by creating forged art of master painters. When Germany invades, he is compelled by the SS to sell paintings to Goering. At the end of the war, he is accused of selling national treasures to the enemy and is on trial for execution. Han is placed with the difficult choice- reveal to the world that he's a master forger, or be hanged for collaborations with the Nazis. His story exposes the contradictions of how we perceive and value art, in a tale so amazing it has to be true.
