"Stories & Metaphors"

Do you detest art gallery etiquette? Are you hungry? Are you perhaps, just existentially speaking, tired of standing? Well, what if we told you that you might still be able to experience a fine slice of Fotoseptiembre — indeed, featuring one of San Antonio’s best-known photographers — even given your considerable issues? That’s right: Whether you’re a starving anarchist who just wants to have a goddamn seat, or a local aesthete looking to gorge on yet another can’t-miss Fotoseptiembre offering, you won’t want to skip Al Rendón’s exhibit at Cappy’s. An avid admirer of photography since he was a small child enchanted by family snapshots, Rendón became a student of the craft at Central Catholic High School, took to photographing the booming influx of musical talent through the 1970s, and has since worked around the world and, perhaps most importantly, extensively in San Antonio as a keen eye on the scene. From the Fiesta Commission to the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, from the San Antonio Archdiocese all the way to the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., Rendón has worked for and with some very important institutions. Presented in a place where one can grab a burger, a beer and a seat, “Stories & Metaphors” finds him fleeing into narrative and commentary as he invites viewers to imagine the deeper meanings behind deceptively simple images.
