Wand

With its huge fuzzed-out guitars, vintage mellotron warbles and dreamy hooks, Wand presents a lysergic smorgasbord for neo-psych fans. Bandleader Cory Hanson’s appetite for sonic experimentation made the band’s first three LPs a pleasantly trippy ride, and it probably didn’t hurt that both he and drummer Evan Burrows further honed their craft as members of Ty Segall’s touring band. But Wand’s latest album, Plum, brought a more egalitarian songwriting approach and smoothed off some of Hanson’s lovable eccentricities. The result? A more standard indie-rock approach. Should be interesting to see which side of the band prevails live. Tour-mates Itasca — the pseudonym of gentle-voice folksinger Kayla Cohen — and Las Rosas — garage rockers with a surprising knack for memorable melodies — make it hard to guess which way Hanson and crew might lean. Either way, it promises to be an eclectic evening.
