Beer and food: How to have both during Fiesta

It’s now April, so you know what that means — rain, chocolate bunnies, the beginning of the hell that is South Texas’ summer, and Fiesta.

Fiesta is not exactly a time for fine dining. It’s a time to swill overpriced beer in cups and eat foods on sticks. A word to the wise, Fiesta-goers: You might be tempted at NIOSA, Taste of the Northside, or Oyster Bake to get a slice of pizza or corn in a cup. But don’t do it! Once you’ve got a beer or margarita, you’ll only have one free hand to eat with. Any food in a cup requires a spoon. Do you want to have to choose between food and beer? Best to stick with turkey legs and corn on the cob, my friend.

In fine dining news, San Antonio is losing one of its chefs, chef de cuisine at The Lodge, Robbie Nowlin. He’s departing for Thomas Keller’s French Laundry in California’s Napa Valley, thought to be one of the best, if not THE best, restaurant in the nation. Muchos kudos to Robbie! While it’s sad to lose great local talent here, it’s a testament to the growing culinary scene when our folks are snapped up by outfits like Cali’s Laundry. Let’s just not make a habit of it.
