You'll have to plan in advance if you want to enjoy a cupcake from here on out. The folks behind Kate's Frosting are turning their original location (2518 N Main) into a pre-order only bakery. The cupcake shop closed its storefront at 7701 Broadway in July, but will use the space as a pop-up bakery going forward where fans can sample and buy new seasonal flavors. The changes come along with a new name for the company (which draws in most of its business from individual orders, wedding celebrations, special events and corporate orders), Kate's Frosting Events, The Sweet Side of Entertaining.

We have more details on locally owned Mildfire Coffee Roasters' second location, which opened on Friday, December 12. The shop at 8434 Fredericksburg, near Wurzbach, serves up espresso drinks, fresh-roasted whole beans, pastries, breakfast sandwiches and slow-pour coffee selections, with juices and sandwiches coming in the next few weeks. Coffee nerds or would-be enthusiasts can also look forward to more demonstrations like the one held on Saturday, December 20 when staff showed patrons brewing methods. A grand opening is planned for Saturday, January 3 with specials, samples and door prizes.

While on the subject of second locations, Urth Juice Bar will open a new shop at the Stone Ridge Shopping Center off Highway 281 and Evans. Though an opening date has not been set, the shop will add more juice to the Stone Oak community (with Juicer Heroes and Farm-to-Juice already cranking out jugo).

Jordan Mackey, executive chef at Las Ramblas inside Hotel Contessa, participated in the annual holiday dinner at the James Beard House on Thursday, December 11 with four other Benchmark Hospitality International chefs. Mackey and co. whipped up favorite game dishes via Washington State, Texas, Colorado, Illinois and Virginia, including, elk, bison, venison, pheasant, veal, goat and black cod.

Finally in "you had too much Champagne over the break" news, the health-conscious food events are already coming in. Chef Zach Zedric Lutton of Zedric's: Fresh Gourmet to Go will offer a free meal to the first 200 guests on Wednesday, January 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. inside their second location (5231 Broadway).
