Cocktail of the Week: Hot Joy's Painkiller and Tiki Week Events

Tiki Week — a week devoted to celebrating tiki drinks — is here, and though predominantly celebrated in Austin, San Antonio has a few pop-ups scheduled to celebrate both new and classic tiki cocktails.

It only seems fitting that this Cocktail of the Week should be a tiki classic, the Painkiller. A Painkiller is a drink that is found on most tiki menus in both craft cocktail bars, and dive bar menus. It’s made with rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, and coconut cream. If you are looking for a nice strong version of this staple island drink, then Hot Joy has you covered.

The Painkiller for Two, is a combination of a house-made coconut blend, OJ, pineapple, Rum Bar overproof rum and El Dorado 5 year. While typically made for two to enjoy, as the name implies, during tiki week (and outside of tiki week, if asked nicely) the bar is offering a single serving of the delicious tropical cocktail.

Hot Joy’s slight spin on the classic sipper is what earns it the cocktail of the week. Looking for something a little more adventurous? Hot Joy does have a full menu with more unique homemade drinks — or you can visit some of the pop-ups this week and get a taste for different tiki libations. Chisme is having a Oaxacan Tiki night on Thursday, Hot Joy is introducing special tiki menus on Friday night, and a bikini blowout and pig roast on Sunday, Tiki Week's finale. You can also stop by Piatti, either Eilan or Quarry location and try their special tiki week cocktail, the Roadrunner and the Surfer Sour.

If you are looking for tiki all year long, stop by The Brooklynite’s Tiki Tuesday, Modernist’s Tiki Thursday or Hot Joy any time of the week.
