Epicurean extravaganza

If you're thinking of starting a diet, this would not be the week. The San Antonio New World Wine & Food Festival runs from Thursday, October 7 through Sunday, October 10 and features all the wonderfully sinful foods and drink you care to eat. (Although the nutritional value of mole is questionable, you could argue the wine will cleanse your arteries.)

Winemaker's dinners, cooking classes, a tequila tasting, champagne brunch, a sampling of Latin wines and cheeses, moles, vanilla, and chocolate are among the events scheduled for the four-day epicurean extravaganza. To see the full schedule and prices, go to

Midnight at the Oasis

The Oasis restaurant at Medina Lake is hosting jazz on Saturdays through October. Ken Slavin and his Jazz Trio perform October 9; Joan Carroll and Footprints are scheduled for October 16; and the Regency Jazz Band plays October 23. Shows run from 8pm-midnight. Foodies and bookworms

In a tribute to Hispanic Heritage Month, cookbook author and restaurant critic Robb Walsh will discuss the history and development of Tex-Mex cuisine and San Antonio's culinary scene on October 9 at 3 pm at the Central Library Auditorium. Walsh will also sign copies of his books. Info: 394-2570.

Zanne Stewart, Gourmet magazine's executive editor collaborated to create the enormous tome, The Gourmet Cookbook, which features six decades of recipes. On October 6, Stewart will visit Central Market to present the best recipes from the book. The course is $60 and runs from 6:30-9 pm. For reservations call 368-8617.

Make it black

If you're curious about what goes in a cup of coffee, Roger Chbeir, who has 20 years of experience blending and roasting coffee, will discuss the process of creating a cup of joe. Students will have the opportunity to sample coffees and tour the What's Brewing store and warehouse where coffee is roasted each week. The course will be on October 8 from 6:30-8:30 pm at 138 West Rhapsody Drive, with a fee of $20 plus $2 sampling fee. Call 657-8866 to register.

No bologna

Parents and their children can learn to fix healthy and nutritious snacks at a course October 9 at the Texas Cooperative Extension, 96 Crossroads Blvd. The course fee is $25 for a parent and child with a $5 tasting fee and will begin at 9 am. To register call 657-8866.
