After three and a half years as the grandfather of all food truck parks, Boardwalk on Bulverde (14732 Bulverde, (210) 402-2829) is shutting down temporarily to comply with San Antonio Health Department concerns. The complete list of upgrades will take longer to address than the 14-day compliance window the City is allowing BOB, and owner Cameron Davies believes renovations will take closer to two months and tens of thousands of dollars. BOB will go out with a bang this weekend with its lineup of nine trucks and free beer. The party starts Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. and ends Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. and 6 to 10 p.m.
Hot Joy, the little Asian pop-up that could, is going through a soft opening at 1014 South Alamo. Folks hungry for twice-fried crab fat caramel chicken wings can start chowing down on Thursday, April 3, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and 5 p.m.-11 p.m. Hot Joy’s kitchen is helmed by chef Quealy Watson, while Karah Carmack, formerly with Bohanan’s and Esquire Tavern, and Brooklynite’s Jeret Peña run the bar program.
Cured (306 Pearl Pkwy, (210) 314-3929) will reopen its doors this Thursday after a small fire shut down the restaurant this past Friday at around 2 p.m. An overheated stud caused a bit of insulation to catch on fire, but the restaurant, staff and midday diners made it out without any major damage. Chef’s lighthearted approach to coping with the minor setback is a new Firehouse menu of charred, blackened and smoked eats.
In other smoky news, Conger’s Smoke Shack has found a permanent home off Broadway. The beloved barbecue truck is moving into 3714 Broadway, in front of the Witte. The family that owns businesses on the same road together, stays together, is that how the old adage goes? Chris Conger’s cousin PJ Gottsacker and wife Nicole purchased Broadway 5050 (5050 Broadway) just down the road from the new Smoke Shack. The menu of Tarantino-inspire eats is a bit smaller, and the bar has finally banned smoking indoors, but the Gottsackers are still trying to keep the overall character of Broadway 5050 intact.
I think we’re all set on Mexican restaurants, said no one ever. Rosario’s North (9715 San Pedro) opened on Monday, March 31 inside the former Barbaresco. The expansive eatery, owned by Lisa Wong with Andy Benavides as design consultant, is quite a lot to take in with its signature hot pink hues, beautiful marg-filled bar and giant menu, but it’s already turning into a hot spot with Northside residents.
