Don't Thai me down

Last week, the family that for two years ran Thai Kitchen, 445 McCarty, packed up their pots and pans and disappeared, allegedly returning to Thailand. "We went by there and they were gone," said Bianca Suwanasung, who owns Thai Kitchen On The River, 100 Villita, with her husband and leased out the McCarty Street restaurant. "We were pretty upset because they didn't tell anybody."

The Suwanasungs said they tried to negotiate with the landlord to keep the location open, but to no avail. Regulars can visit the existing River Walk location, which has incorporated the menu and cooks from the abandoned Thai Kitchen. For more information call 226-2970.

Tender vittles

Crumpets Restaurant, 3920 Harry Wurzbach, is hosting a Gourmet Rafting Trip October 21-23. Rafters will travel through the spectacular Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park, floating alongside 80-million-year-old cliffs that tower 1,500 feet overhead. The trip will feature live music by Texas legend Butch Hancock and a menu by Chef Francois Maeder.

For those who eschew potato buds and trail mix, fear not: Maeder has been cooking up gourmet camp grub on the Rio Grande River for 17 years. Rafters will be fed high-performance meals, such as marinated shrimp, rack of lamb, and Beef Wellington, as well as a wide selection of domestic and imported wines. No drunks on the Bocce court!

Wine enthusiasts will have the opportunity to sample South Texas wine, cheese, and sausage at the San Antonio New World Wine and Food Festivals Rambling Rosé and Summer Wine Tasting, noon-5 p.m. Saturday, August 13, at Becker Vineyards. Wes Marshall, author of The Wine Trails of Texas, will moderate the event, and there will be live music and bocce ball tournaments. Tickets are $15, reservations recommended. Just opened

Istanbul Café, 3720 NW Loop 410, serves Turkish and Mediterranean cooking, with a menu that features such specialties as Pirzola: marinated lamb chops served with rice and mixed vegetables. The café is open daily from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. For more information call 736-2887.
