Going gluten-free

Danna Korn, an author and expert on celiac disease and gluten intolerance will lead a Q&A session, cooking demonstration, and lecture on "Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free: Should You Be?" at Sun Harvest, 17700 Highway 281 North, Thursday, September 22, from 6:30-8 p.m.

1 in 133 Americans have celiac disease, a genetic disorder that inhibits the digestion of wheat, rye, and barley. Those with the disease can suffer gastrointestinal problems and malnutrition if they eat foods containing those grains. Info: 525-1844, Ext. 520.

New spirits bubbling up in Leon Springs

Beeman's Wine Spirits Gourmet in the Boardwalk Shopping Center, 23535 I-10 West, continues its grand opening festivities through Saturday, September 24, from 10 a.m.-9 p.m.

During the grand opening, there will be nightly olive oil tastings from 6-8 p.m., beer samplings from 7-9 p.m., and a coffee tasting Thursday, September 22, from 6-8 p.m. Info: 698-5046.

Eating by the light of la luna

An evening of food, music, and stargazing at the San Antonio Botanical Garden is slated for Gardens by Moonlight, Saturday, September 24, from 7-11 p.m. John the Greek, Cheesy Jane's, Little Taste of Heaven, and Wynne's Chinese Food will provide edibles for the event. Advance tickets are $12 and available at Starbucks; admission is $15 at the door. Rain date is Sunday, September 25.

Bite the Big Apple in Helotes

Grey Moss Inn Chef Jeff White will cook at New York's James Beard House in December, but is offering the same menu at the Helotes restaurant, 19010 Scenic Loop Road, Thursday, September 29, at 7 p.m. Cost is $80 per person, plus tax and gratuity. The extensive menu includes grilled Northern Alaskan caribou bratwurst with molten smoked buffalo Mozzarella on bruschetta with toasted walnuts; a shooter of smoked tomato basil bisque with buttermilk oyster, Texas goat cheese, and tiny arugula; oxtail menudo with fresh coriander, white hominy, and Bandera quail egg. Several wines will be featured, including Pascual Toso Malbec, Reserve, Barrancas Vineyard, Mendoza, 2002; St. Gregory Pinot Noir, Mendocino, 2002; and Messina Hof Angel Late Harvest Johnisberg Riesling from Texas.

Great gumbo!

While New Orleans rebuilds, enjoy a taste of Louisiana culture at the 25th annual Medina Lake Cajun Festival, Saturday, September 24, from 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m. at the Lakehills Civic Center, Park Road 37, 1.7 miles west of FM 1283, 30 miles west of San Antonio.

The event features Cajun food, music, dancing, history, and a gumbo cook-off. Tickets are $8 for adults, children 10 and under are admitted free. Proceeds benefit the Medina Lake Betterment Association.
