Former San Remo owner and chef Robert Riddle has a new restaurant in the works, reportedly opening under the name Riddle’s. At 7 p.m. Thursday, March 16, Riddle will talk about his new project and “Creative Ideas for Using Culinary Herbs” at the San Antonio Herb Society, Funston and New Braunfels. Riddle will demonstrate a dry-cured salmon gravlax using fresh dill, fennel, and thyme, and served with a variety of sauces that will highlight the fish’s simple preparation. Free. Info: 641-8166.
There’s something fishy in the air this month. On March 9, Hugh Carpenter, cooking instructor and author of Fast Fish, will be the guest chef at Central Market, 4821 Broadway. During the class, Carpenter will demonstrate how to prepare a variety of fish, including Tuscan salmon, Thai halibut, and swordfish tacos. The class runs from 6:30-9 p.m. and costs $65. On Saturday, March 11, the Kids Club at Whole Foods Market, 255 E. Basse, will decorate giant halibut cut-outs and dress up like the old man and the sea, in over-sized galoshes, rain slickers, and fishing gear, for photos from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. And, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 18, Whole Foods’ Suzy Holleron will demonstrate seafood recipes and wine pairings. March also marks the start of the Cove’s monthly wine tastings. From 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, March 9, the car wash-launderette-bar will feature wines from Argentina and Chile. The $5 charge includes a fruit, olives, and cheese tray. Information: thecove.us.
We are sorry to hear that Cementville Laboratory and Cafe, 7310 Jones Maltsberger, has closed. It reportedly will reopen with a new look and menu. •
