Food & Drink : All you can eat

News and notes from the San Antonio food scene

If you’ve already affixed a “Kinky for Governor. Why the hell not?” bumper sticker to your vehicle, consuming the greasy goodness of a limited-edition Casbeers Kinky Burger is one more way to support Friedman’s campaign.

For $5.95, the famous Central Texas music venue and bar, located at 1719 Blanco Road, serves a half-pound Texas beef burger on Jewish rye bread, with American cheese and plenty of grilled onions. One dollar of the profits from each burger goes to the Kinky cause. From the evening of June 6, when Casbeer’s began selling the burger, to post-lunch the following day, Casbeers owner Steven Silbas said the bar had already sold about 20 Kinky Burgers. Silbas is planning a large-scale fundraiser with local bands at the end of June. See Casbeers.com for more info.

Want to eat like a godfather without the indigestion caused by scheming lieutenants and demanding mistresses? Tonight’s the night at Sage Ristorante e Bar, 401 S. Alamo in the Fairmount Hotel. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., chef and owner (and, it would seem, Sopranos fan) Massimo Pallottelli will serve a banquet-style dining tribute to the HBO juggernaut, featuring antipasti, cannelloni, and entrees such as Polpettone (stuffed meatloaf, eh). After-dinner drinks and cigars to follow. $60 — ahem — a head, includes house wine, but not tax and gratuity. Reservations recommended: 212-5820 or 224-8800, ext. 150.

Whole Foods Market has embraced viral marketing with its Go Local Product Referral Program. Know of a great organic-egg farmer? Artisan goat cheese? Tuna-fruit jelly? Email your tip, including brand name, product name, a short description, and contact info, to [email protected]. If WF decides to carry a product you recommended, you’ll receive a $100 WF gift card.

Central Market’s summer cooking classes are in full swing. Our pick for the week: Food & Wine of Southern France with Chef David Holtzman and CM’s beer and wine experts. The menu includes Garlic Soup (good for heart, soul, and warding off vampires), Country Terrine, Lavender & Thyme Roasted Cornish Game Hens, and more. 6:30-9 p.m. Friday. $50. Call 368-8617 for info, a complete class schedule, & reservations.

Those Communist fomenters, the Bexar Land Trust, are at it again, this time hosting meetings to encourage the revolutionary practice of building community gardens. If you don’t have your own FBI file yet, make plans to attend one of the three upcoming informational sessions: 6 p.m. June 20, Guadalupe Community Center, 1801 W. Durango. 6 p.m. June 21, Presa Community Center, 3721 S. Presa. 6:30 p.m. June 22, YMCA, 1213 Iowa. Call 222-8430 for more info.
