Industry News: Farm to Juice opens, Pink Pig’s last oink and Sonic’s UTSA burger stamp

All you Roadrunners, go to Sonic Drive-In (visit for participating locations) starting on Thursday, August 29 and order a Rowdy’s Brisket Cheeseburger. The brisket burger will be spirit-heavy with the UTSA logo on the bun in edible food coloring. Plus, a portion of proceeds will benefit UTSA student athletes. Do it for your school! Eat that burger!

A metric buttload of juice places have opened up inside 410 lately. For those outside of 1604, don’t feel left out–you have a new juice place, too. Farm to Juice (18730 Stone Oak Pkwy, Ste 100) is now open and they offer health-specific juices like Energy and Immunity, as well as juice tasting cleanses, and they happily take back your beverage’s glass bottle after you’ve juiced up.

Rebecca Rather opened the Pink Pig Bakery & Café (6266 E US 290) last year in Fredericksburg, bringing her signature desserts from Rather Sweet Bakery. The Pink Pig closed last week, according to an announcement the restaurant made on Facebook, due to the loss of their lease. Winos–did you know you can order wine from H-E-B through You can order and pay for wine, and then pick it up at a participating H-E-B store. If you’re planning a dinner party or want to pick up a specific bottle, this is a service worth checking out.

In case you missed the news, Meatopia, the vegetarian’s nightmare previously held in New York, is coming. But what do they know about meaty-meat-meat on the East Coast? This year, they came to their senses and are bringing Meatopia to San Antonio. It’ll be held November 2-3 at the Pearl, so you have plenty of time to train for a meatstravaganza in order to impress masters like Austin’s Paul Qui (of Top Chef and Qui fame), Rene Ortiz and Laura Sawicki (formerly of La Condesa and Sway, two of the city’s hippest joints), Dallas’ Tim Byres (Smoke, recently lauded by Bon Apetit, Food and Wine and Forbes), Houston’s Chris Shepherd (Underbelly, one of Esquire’s best new restaurants in 2012), and New York’s Justin Simillie (Il Buco Alimentari, a “village-inside-a-restaurant” that completely enraptured The New York Times last year). Sushi Zushi (multiple locations) flies under the radar in the food community, but deserves more attention, if only for the happy hour. In addition to offering drinks (a full bar) and basic rolls at discounted prices, they also serve one signature roll a week at about a 25 percent discount. Happy hour is every day from 3-7 p.m. Pretty sweet deal.
